Job Search

We need a group effort to find jobs for refugee family members. Full-time jobs, part-time work, and temporary projects are welcome. Saw May Htun, 21, speaks good English, but the parents and Saw Mo Lin, 18, would need to work in jobs that require minimal understanding of English. None of the family members have work experience with the exceptions of Saw May Htun teaching English at the refugee camp and some yard work that family members have done since coming to the U.S. Possibilities for the boys include landscaping, other outdoor work at places such as farms and vineyards, basic manufacturing, dishwashing, and other manual labor. The mom, Yi Than, could do housekeeping at a hotel, hospital, etc. We can send Saw May Htun or another translator to a job site to help a parent or Saw Mo Lin understand requirements, processes, and expectations.

Please report on what workplaces you’ve explored by posting comments to this page so we know what’s been done and don’t duplicate efforts. And please pray for this family to secure appropriate work and become financially self sufficient. Thanks for your help!

  1. Consider the job search method offered by The Five O’clock Club at http://www.fiveoclockclub.com

Proven methods based on research of actual people who were successful in getting jobs, changing careers and doing it faster then most who went about it by sending out resumes. The method begins with self-assessment exercises, values clarification, and market research to connect the job searcher’s motivated skills with what’s needed in the marketplace so the individual can come up with Targeted Career goals and to set down in writing a logical plan for the search.

I am a new member ($49) and am reading through the books and doing these exercises (books $51).

With translation help why couldn’t these ideas help parents and eldest daughter alike?

Once motivated skills are identified and each searcher has written a 15- or 40-yer vision for his or her life, work can begin with weekly online meetings with a handful of others and a professional job coach. ($360 for ten meetings). Job coaching is also offered at discounted rates per hour is the person had individual needs for counseling, eg. career direction, interview preparation, salary negotiation, etc.

The online meetings are optional to membership, but highly recommended. Individual job coaching is optional, as well.

Sinnce I already have the needed books, and am, myself going through the methods, I would be happy to lend an hour or two a day to assist their efforts at understanding the process and working through the exercises, etc.
